What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood flow to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. This can cause brain cells to die, leading to serious consequences.

Types of Stroke:
Understanding your migraine triggers is crucial for effective management. Triggers can vary from person to person but commonly include:

  1. Ischemic Stroke: This is the most common type, occurring when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain.
  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke: This type happens when a weakened blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain tissue.
  3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Often referred to as a “mini-stroke,” it’s caused by a temporary clot. While it doesn’t cause permanent damage, it’s a warning sign that a more serious stroke may occur in the future.
Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms:
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Severe headache with no known cause
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Acting FAST Can Save Lives:

Recognizing the signs of stroke and acting quickly is crucial for minimizing damage and improving outcomes. Remember to think FAST:

  • F – Face Drooping: Ask the person to smile. Is one side of their face drooping?
  • A – Arm Weakness: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S – Speech Difficulty: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred or strange?
  • T – Time to Call 911: If you observe any of these signs, it’s time to call emergency services immediately.
Prevention is Key:

While some risk factors for stroke, such as age and family history, can’t be changed, there are many lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk:

  • Control High Blood Pressure: Keep your blood pressure in check through diet, exercise, and medication if necessary.
  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting saturated fats and sodium.
